about

Vincent York should be a household name in Detroit jazz. Though primarily known for Jazzistry, his nationally recognized, award-winning educational nonprofit, and his time spent with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, his significant work playing with Detroit’s contemporary greats like Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney and Lawrence Williams is largely unknown. Respected by some of Detroit’s top players in its rich jazz scene in the ‘80’s and ‘90s, he garnered these all-stars for his band for multiple recordings and performances.

Vincent’s impact as an educator also runs deep. Based in Ann Arbor for over four decades, he is a beacon of mentorship, touching multiple generations of musicians, influencing their careers and music, and passing on a sacred lineage, those particular compositions essential to Detroit’s jazz legacy.

I am one of those who owe Vincent immense gratitude as my forever mentor.
—Shigeto

Blending Forces was recorded in February of 1989. A snapshot into a moment in Detroit Jazz, with some of the most renowned and talented musicians and composers the city has created and sent into the world. Dancing between mature restraint and calculated ferocity, The New York Force takes you on a journey of undeniable musical power.
